Frequently Asked Questions...
How do I get my dogs to calm down??
I am the owner of two wonderful rescued siberian huskys. They are both wonderful dogs, very obedient, housebroke, friendly with everyone, etc. But, like all huskys, they are high strung.
I am 2 months pregnant w/ our first child. I know that when this baby comes, I won't have as much time to devote to excersising them like I do now. My hubby thinks I need to start finding them a new home, but I don't want to!!! So I need a little help on getting them to mellow out. They get a daily walk, plus plenty of outside time to play.
I can never play ball or with a toy with them, because they instantly loose interest with me and play fight with each other, which would go on all night if I let them. Which is not only loud, and could wake a baby, but they tear everything up and knock things over in the house because they play so rough. Also, they wont walk anywhere, they run,and i'm afraid they will run right into the baby.
Any tips on getting them to calm down when the baby comes.
Answer:
Sadly, many people give up their dogs when a first baby comes home. So very sad that this has to happen. How old are your dogs? Full grown adults, or under 3 yrs and still have those puppy traits lingering? Training is going to be your best friend, and seeking out a professional trainer to assist you is going to be a big help. I would suggest contacting a local training club for some referrals of good trainers (I wouldn't bother with the Petsmart kind of place as you have specific needs you want to meet and these kinds of places aren't going to help you out much their).
Do you have a fenced back yard (I hope with this breed you do)? Send them outside when they want to tassle, where they won't be able to damage anything. Teach them that it's okay outside, but not inside the home.
When your baby is big enuf to move about, if your dogs aren't settled, use a baby gate to keep them separated when you are not right their to monitor their interactions. This should be done with any dog and young child anyway.
A note on the "they get loud and will wake the baby"... This is something I notice SO MANY parents do. They insist on total quiet time when the "baby is sleeping"... this is setting yourself up for a hard time IMO. Problem is, you may find yourself in a place where the baby needs to sleep and it simply isn't quiet. Then you have a cranky baby who won't go to sleep, even tho needing to do so. Remember that during your pregnancy, your baby will be able to hear things in the outside world, including the occasions your dogs get "loud". Baby will come out already used to those noises. When baby is just home, begin the habit of playing soft music when baby sleeps. This allows baby to become accustomed to sleeping with noise and will help drown out other noises outside of the room. My dogs bark a lot when people come to the door, or a dog walks past the house, but they never woke either of my boys when they were little. Get your baby used to noise from day one and I promise, life will be much easier!
Good Luck!
