Red Pattern
Red Sea liveaboard scuba diving itineraries
The liveaboard dive trips in the Red Sea tend to follow one of four patterns based on embarkation point. It is crucial when you are planning a trip to be aware of your flight destination as this will influence the dive site itinerary and what you should expect to see.
Pattern 1 Northern red Sea Liveaboards.
These mostly embark in Sharm El Sheikh and cover dive sites in the Straits of Tiran area but also venture round the corner into the Gulf of Suez to dive the wreck of the Thistlegorm and sometimes other wrecks nearby. Liveaboard wreck diving in the Red Sea tends to be in these northern areas of Straits of Tiran and southern end of the Gulf of Suez.
Some northern Red Sea liveaboard trips embark in Hurghada and dive reef sites and wrecks in the Gulf of Suez, around the Giftun islands and Abu Nuhas a reef with at least three wrecks. As well as the wrecks dolphins are often seen when diving Abu Nuhas.
Pattern 2 Southern Red Sea Liveaboards
These embark in Hurghada and set out to dive the offshore reefs of The Brothers, Daedalus and other reefs south of Hurghada. They may also dive the Giftun islands and Abu Nuhas.
Pattern 3 Deep South Liveaboards
These may embark in either Hurghada or Port Ghalib and return to the opposite. Increasingly they are embarking and returning to Port Ghalib (nearest airport Marsa Alam).
These dive trips are some of the most spectacular in the Red Sea with unspoilt reefs including the well known ones of Elphinstone, Daedalus, Dolphin house and St. Johns. The likelihood of seeing sharks, manta rays, turtles and the Dugong is greatly increased if you dive in the Deep South. The most I have seen is during the spring months.
Some Red Sea Liveaboards now sail from Hamata in the Deep South.
Pattern 4 combined and specialist trips
There are also some specialist dive trips focusing on either wreck diving, deep south, sharks, reef clean up, technical diving or photographic weeks. Embarkation points tend to be Sharm for wreck diving weeks, Hurghada or Port Ghalib for southern reefs.
