I have a question about a dog's nails?
We have had our Boston's for a few months and the people we got them from didn't take the best care of them. Their nails are long and the quicks have grown out. I am as careful as possible with them, because they already dislike their feet being messed with, and I'm trying to make it a positive experience.
With regular trimming (we use both a nail trimmer and that Pedipaws thing) will the quicks eventually get back to a more respectable length? I worry about them getting their nails caught in things.
Answer:
Try to clip them back as much as you can- i think by your answer you mean you can no longer make out a distinctive quick-line?
If so, trim them as much as you feel necessary, and do it tiny bits at a time. Alternatively- you could file them down with a metal file as this doesn't cause a flow of blood compared with actually cutting the quick.
Trying to make them comfortable about having their feet fiddled with is great, carry on with it using treats ETC, that way they will associate.
If it really is a struggle to control them and what you are doing, try letting them out to run or walk on rough concrete. If you have a patio- try and contain them there for a few hours a day. This is like' natural filing!' and will wear them down to the quick naturally.
