Pet Star: Smart Pig
What Everyone Should Know About Guinea Pig Care
Are you thinking of bringing a furry, squeaky, bundle of love home? Guinea pigs make wonderful pets. They have a friendly temperament and rarely bite, unless extremely scared. They're just the right size for younger children to hold confidently. Hamsters can be very fast and are more likely to nip, which could result in a child dropping them and causing injury. Rabbits need more room to hop and could accidentally kick a child. Fish, well, they're fine – but you can't really give them a cuddle, can you? (I wouldn't suggest you try!)
However, much forethought should be put into bringing a guinea pig into your life. Here are some useful facts and tips to note:
- Guinea pigs can become very depressed if not housed with at least one other piggy for company. So if you're thinking of getting just one little squeaker, think again.
- Unfortunately, a lot of people confuse hamsters with guinea pigs, and for this reason buy large hamster exercise wheels for them. Do NOT do this. A guinea pig's anatomy is completely different to a hamster's. Exercise wheels can cause serious damage to a guinea pig's back.
- Like humans, guinea pigs don't make their own vitamin C. They require 30mg/kg of vitamin C a day to prevent scurvy. One of the most common mistakes people have made in the past is to supplement a guinea pig's diet by adding vitamin C to their water. This makes the water go off much quicker, especially in warmer climates, and if there is a taste to the water, piggies are less likely to drink, which could result in them becoming dehydrated. To supplement a guinea pig's diet correctly, a varied diet of vegetables is required. Here's a useful chart for reference: http://www.guinealynx.info/diet_vegs.html
- In America, guinea pigs are quite often referred to by the name of 'cavy' or 'cavies'.
- Although many people still do, piggies are not best housed outside. Domestic guinea pigs are often frightened by loud noises, such as thunder storms (they don't have the strongest hearts), and extreme weather conditions could potentially harm your piggies.
- It is never EVER ok to house guinea pigs with rabbits. While they may not mind each others company, piggies have completely different dietary needs to rabbits. Not only this, but by no fault of the rabbits, it has been know for them to seriously injure or kill piggies from kicking them with their hind legs. Do not risk a guinea pig getting a broken rib and expensive vet bills - house them separately!
- The average life span of a piggy is 5.5 years. So always consider where your life may be in years to come and whether you could still care for a piggy.
Housing A Guinea Pig
Pet shop-bought cages are usually highly unsuitable. They are far too small, with the average store bought cage being around 6.1 sq feet. The suggested minimum cage size from expert piggy owners and rescue homes is 7.5sq feet for two guinea pigs. The more room the better. Purchasing A Guinea Pig
The worst thing that a potential guinea pig owner could do is buy a piggy from a pet shop or a breeder. Why? Because all over the country there are rescue centres filled to the brim with lovely little squeakers looking for a loving new home. Normally, all the shelters would require for you to adopt is a small adoption fee of your choosing and ensuring you have suitable living conditions to bring a piggy home to. If you buy a guinea pig from a pet shop or a breeder, another piggy is relegated to its life in an animal shelter. Search on Google for local re-homing websites or contact your local RSPCA shelter directly.
So, to sum everything up - Make sure to do plenty of research before you even consider getting a piggy. Keep the following in mind:
- The initial cost of buying/constructing a sufficient piggy housing
- Ongoing costs of bedding, and food; daily fresh vegetables, dry food etc
- Veterinary costs if your pet becomes ill
- Will you still be able to care for your piggy in years to come
- Time – Will you be able to spend time caring for your pig
