Pellets
Pellets are the most important part of your pig's diet. You should make sure that he has access to pellets at all times. The best brands will give you cavy all of the nutrition they need. Some pellets even provide additional vitamin C.
Vitamin C
Speaking of vitamin C, it's very important for your pig. Like us, guinea pigs aren't capable of making their own vitamin C. Therefore, they need to have plenty of it in their diet. Although pellets with additional vitamin C will help, this usually won't be enough. Also, the effectiveness of the vitamin will deteriorate as the food gets older. It's best to give your pig at least 20mg of supplements each day.
Hay
Like pellets, cavies should have access to hay at all times. Timothy hay is the best although oat and meadow are also suitable. Alfalfa hay has too much calcium, so pigs older than six months old shouldn't eat it on a regular basis. It would be better to give alfalfa hay once a month.
Vegetables
Fresh vegetables are also important guinea pig food. Green leafy vegetables help provide your pig with additional vitamin C. Some of these include collard greens, lettuce, broccoli, and kale. Other suitable vegetables include parsley, spinach, tomatoes, and carrots.
Fruits
In addition to fresh vegetables, cavies also like fresh fruits. It's important that you only introduce one fruit at a time to see how your pig reacts to each one. If you feed him fruits like apples and watermelon, you will need to take the seeds out first. They are toxic.
