Frequently Asked Questions...
Does my rat like to have a companion?
Ok heres the full story
my rat got prego at pet shop i didnt know, took her home. she gave birth to 10, got homes for 9, might be keeping other one. when the mom had them, she always wanted to get away from them. she hasnt seen any in a week, the remaining were at my moms office (she works at a veterinary clinic, students wanted the babies) when she came back i put her is a smaller cage cause my ferret nation cage with fleece flooring would be hard to clean cause my rat (the mom) is litter trained and the babie isnt. i put the baby, Spark, in with the mom, Pekoe, and they wrestled a lot.
do you think i should keep Spark as a companion for Pekoe?
is the wrestling just playing?
do you think my rat would like to have a companion?
would having a companion give her the comfort to explore the toys in her cage that she never plays with?
would having a friend make Pekoe more active? cause she sleeps all day
both are females, none squeak when wrestling and there is no blood
Answer:
I think you should keep spark as a companion unless its an unnentered male or the female is not spayed (they will have babies even though there related)
If they are fighting you will definitely notice, they will release horrific screaming if one gets hert or course and if they were fighting they would be trying to draw blood.
Your rat would love a companion as of any rat.
Having a companion has nothing to do with what toys she plays with, she might play with one toy for a year then suddenly stop playing with it and go to a different toy so don't worry about what toys she does and does not play with its simply what she wants to play with at the time.
Yes it would make her active but not during the day rats a nocturnal and sleep during the day anyway so having a companion would only make her more active at night not during the day because they would both be sleeping during the day.
