Frequently Asked Questions...
I'm getting a pet rodent, should I get a rat, degu, ferret or chinchilla. ?
I would like the pros and cons of each animal and people's personal experience with the animals, any other suggestion of animal would be great. Thanks
Answer:
A ferret isn't a rodent and needs a ton of space, they're a bit more like keeping a smelly cat than a rodent. Entertaining but high maintenance!
Chinchillas are very cute looking, but need a huge enclosure and can be very nervous. The store bought cages are just too small. Think more of an indoor tall aviary - a 4ft square and 6ft tall one with lots of shelves and ramps would be ideal, and you would need to make sure the wire is welded mesh and the walls buy the cage are protected - Chinchillas can chew walls down to the brick, they can be VERY destructive.
Rats are very intelligent animals, but they can smell and need rigourous cleaning to avoid it. They also have a tragically short lifespan, only about 2 years, and can get all sorts of health problems in their later years. They are social and are best in bonded pairs/groups.
Degus I know less about. I would keep them as you would rats really, with a very large secure enclosure/cage and they like to be in groups.
Basically it depends on how much work you want to put in! Small animals are more work than keeping a cat if you ask me!
