Degus, which are small rodents originating in Chile are becoming more and more popular as pets in the UK, even though a lot of people have never even heard of them. Degu pet health care is relatively simple as long as owners are prepared for the commitment.
Like with other animals, a major starting point for pet health care is providing a suitable home. For degus this means a decent sized cage equipped with a water bowl or bottle and a food bowl. Find a quiet spot for the cage which isn’t in the sun or a draught.
Cat litter makes a good bedding base, as do hay and shredded paper in which degus will love burrowing. Pet health care problems can arise through lack of regular cleaning, so clean once a week at least.
Carrots, cucumbers and other hard veg are perfect for degus. Avoid sugary and starchy foods because they could cause diabetes. Always make sure your degu has plenty of water. The degus’ teeth constantly grow so must be worn down. Orange teeth mean a healthy degu: yellow or white suggest a potentially serious pet health care problem.
Another part of pet health care is handling your pet. As long as you take care to be gentle handling shouldn’t be a problem. If you pick them up, hold them gently underneath. Don’t reach for them from above because it might make them nervous. And never, ever pick them up by the tail. Degus’ tails will fall off if they are grabbed there. And it will not regrow. If this does happen, talk to a vet.
