The Alfalfa plant is an important forage and hay crop for all kinds of animals. The Medes of ancient Persia where thought to have been the first to domesticate the Alfalfa plant. The Latin name medicago sativa means "sowed by the Medians" The Greeks planted the Alfalfa as early as 490 B C .The Arabs liked it so much that they named it al-fasfasah, best fodder. They fed the Alfalfa to their horses for excellent speed and strength but also used the Alfalfa leaves, sprouts and seed for themselves.
The Spanish Settlers brought the Alfalfa plant to Mexico and Chile and called it Chilean Clover. At this time there is no scientific evidence that it will benefit any ailment. But Alfalfa has a future in the human nutrition. It is an inexpensive source of vitamin A, D, E, and K, Calcium, Potassium, Zinc, and Iron..The Vitamin K in the Alfalfa is a blood clotting agent. The herbalists of today treat Arterioclerosis, (loss of elasticity of the artery walls) high Cholesterol and Diabetics with the Alfalfa plant.
