Clicker training information

CLICKER FACTS

Clicker training is a gentle training method which uses positive reinforcement as a training sytem based on operant conditionning, in which the dog operates on his environment. Operant conditionning forms an association between a behavior and a consequence. The reinforcement must happen as the behavior is occuring for the animal to make the connection. The clicker is therefore used as a conditionnal reinforcer. Over the years, clicker training has grown more and more in popularity as a highly effective training method and the method of choice for positive reinforcement trainers.

Clicker training is based on the teachings of B.F. Skinner, an established psychologist of his day, whose theory was that all creatures will repeat behavior that is rewarded and not repeat behavior that isn't.

Clicker training is widely used as a training tool. Here are a some varied examples:

.used with dolphins and whales at seaparks

.animals used in movies and tv shows

.police patrol dogs

.service and hearing dogs

.obedience and agility competition

.conformation showring dogs

.hunting

.field trials

.tracking

.shelter dogs

.our own pets ( from household manners to fun sports and activities )

Clicker training depends on reinforcers ( ie. food, toys, petting, etc... ). It uses a distinct signal to mark a desired behavior, followed by a motivational reward. It does not rely on punishment, force or aversives. Here are some examples of reinforcers which can be used:

Foods: hotdog sausages, cheerios, doggie treats or biscuits, freeze-dried liver, cheese, popcorn, bread crust, croutons, kibbled dog food, pieces of cooked chicken, etc...Toys: tennis balls, rope tugs, stuffed toys, kongs, frisbees, sticks, soccer balls, basket balls, etc...

Clicker training is used to teach new behaviors. Once it is learned, it isn't needed anymore for that particular behavior but praise and treats are always appropriate.

Clicker training establishes a cooperative, fun and positive relationship between you and your dog and creates a mutual appreciation. Anything you need your dog to know can be taught by reinforcement training. There are so many behaviors which can be taught or modified using the clicker! It is a growing field with endless possibilities!
